The simplest way to understand the true meaning of discipleship at the heart of Christianity

If Jesus were to come to your dream tonight and ask of you "Be my disciple, child," how would you answer? Your answers would certainly vary depending on where you are. But if you are a Christian, whether you like it or not, you have already answered this question when you chose to be a Christian!

A disciple is simply someone who believes in Jesus and seeks to follow Him in his or her daily life. Being a disciple of Jesus means first of all that we want to learn from Him and we do this through studying  God’s Word, the Bible, and listen to others teach from it. Being a disciple also means we want to put God’s Word into action by seeking to live the way Christ wants us to live with God’s help.

This is a study of the teachings of Jesus, revealed in the gospel, as the proper authority or guide in the lives of disciples. We emphasize the need for obedience to Scripture, rather than human wisdom as revealed in creeds, traditions, family religion, feelings, or church laws.

Christian discipleship is the process by which disciples grow in the Lord Jesus Christ and are equipped by the Holy Spirit, who resides in our hearts, to overcome the pressures and trials of this present life and become more and more Christlike.

Discipleship is an integral part of the growth of the Christian today. It is the process of leading others by example to follow Jesus Christ through obedience to God’s word and the leading of His Holy Spirit.

Christian discipleship is a lifelong journey that involves ups and downs, hardships and heartaches, times where God seems distant as well as times when he seems near.
Christian discipleship is a call to continuously live in Jesus and to let His Word be the constant guide to faith and conduct. Doctrinal faithfulness, lifelong obedience, and fearless witness to the Master will set a disciple apart from others.

Discipleship is absolutely necessary since Jesus, Himself, commanded His followers in the Bible to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey all of His commands (Matt 28:19-20).

Trusting in Jesus Christ is fundamental, but it’s only the first step. Your primary purpose is to take a lifelong journey following in the Lord’s footsteps – honoring him with your action and speech and increasing in Biblical wisdom.

Jesus says, “And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:27).

Anyone who would follow Jesus must first realize that discipleship is a total commitment, and involves giving up everything. That’s right, everything! This does not mean that the prospective disciple should go out and sell all his possessions and give his money to the poor. Nor does it mean that he should be only willing to give up everything. It means giving up everything he owns. He does this not by getting rid of his belongings, but by giving up his right of ownership. He realizes that he is merely a steward, not an owner.

To be a disciple of our Lord demands that He becomes the most important thing in our life. This is what Luke sought to remind us of when he recorded the words of our Lord in the fourteenth chapter of his gospel.

If you are a true disciple, your Christian walk will be challenging and exciting, and you will have a sense of purpose and direction. But if your Christian experience can be described as dull, unfulfilling, and even boring at times, you need to seriously examine the statements Jesus made concerning what it means to be a disciple.

Are you a true, faithful disciple of Christ?
