Who to turn to when scriptures seem difficult to understand

So you’ve been reading the bible, and really enjoy the teachings, however some passages turn out to be difficult to understand, and you really need someone to help you unfold the mystery. You approach your parents, they try their best, but they are unable to express it the way you could understand. You then go to your cell leader and pastor, yet there is no understanding. You are stuck, and you don’t seem to have an idea of who to approach next.

The book of Isaiah 55:8-9, says "'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,' declares the LORD.’For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.' "

Scripture contains easily grasped portions that are fairly straightforward. But some of it is very difficult, intellectually speaking. In fact, Peter once said that some of Paul’s writings were intellectually challenging, hard to understand, and easily distorted by untaught (that is, uneducated in Christian theology) and unstable people (2 Peter 3:16).

So what should you do? Whom should you go to? Well my friend, here is the secret to understanding the word of God:

Sometimes when the bible sounds confusing ask the Holy Spirit, the helper whom Christ left for us to unfold it for you. As you read the word, let him be the counselor in the midst of it all. He is the key to understanding the word. There is no other better way God would want us to understand his word, besides through the Holy Spirit. Even when our pastors are preaching or teaching, before the sermon they ask and seek the counsel of the Holy Spirit’s guidance. They are the vessel for God, the Holy Spirit works through them.

In Romans 10:17 the Bible tells us that faith comes by hearing and hearing comes from the word of God through Jesus Christ. Throughout his ministry on earth Jesus answered so many questions that troubled people’s lives. He even changed the way religious leaders thought of the word. When scriptures seemed difficult for the apostles to understand they always turned to Jesus for explanation and understanding. We ought to do the same; we should look to Jesus when scriptures seem difficult. He might not be around today, but he left us the Holy Spirit, and our spirit and his spirit testifies that we belong to the father. When the word is revealed to us in Jesus through the Holy Spirit, we understand God’s desire for us, and we commit our lives unto his will.

If you take a read at Luke 24:13-35 The two men of the road to Emmanus were confused about certain things the scriptures had told, however on the way while discussing, someone appeared to them and started explaining the scriptures. They drew him to the conversation, confessing their confusion about certain portion of the scriptures; this person was none other than Jesus Himself. He started explaining everything to them and suddenly their eyes were opened and their hearts warmed. They were delighted; they understood what the scriptures were talking about. He might not be physically present with us today, but He left us his spirit, and the spirit can accomplish the work of Christ in us. We should make the Holy Spirit our companion especially in the matters of reading and understanding the word of God, he alone can reveal the true meaning of the word of God to us.

The two disciples walking down the road to Emmanus were not expecting Jesus to rise. In fact, they were leaving Jerusalem because they had lost hope in Him, However after he had appeared to them and broke the bread, and opened their eyes, new hope for eternal life was ignited, therefore, when we let the Holy Spirit take charge, when Christ is the key to understanding God’s word, we all find hope, deliverance from fear, hope for a bright future, and a new purpose in life. If we have the right heart attitude we can start to see many truths about the Scriptures and how they relate to the world today.

I hope this post helps you through the process of learning God's word,
